How to Improve Spoken English with a Partner
Choose a task, not just a topic
“Travel” is broad. “Explain a travel problem and suggest two solutions” gives both speakers something to do. Tasks make it easier to notice progress because you can repeat the same goal with different details. Start with situations you actually expect to use.
Agree on a correction contract
Ask: “Would you like corrections now or at the end?” Interrupting every sentence can stop the conversation. Ignoring every difficulty may leave useful learning unexplored. A practical compromise is to note two recurring issues and discuss them after the main task. Neither partner needs to pretend to know every rule.
Use repair phrases
Prepare phrases such as “Could you say that another way?”, “Let me try again” and “Do you mean…?” These help you stay in English when comprehension fails. Practise them deliberately, including in easy conversations, so they are available when you need them.
Repeat with a small change
Explain the same idea again in fewer words, to a different audience or with a new example. Repetition is useful when you improve clarity rather than memorize an entire script. At the end, write three phrases that you want to reuse next time.
Protect the relationship
Keep appointments, share speaking time and tell your partner if you need a break. A short dependable session is better than an ambitious arrangement that creates pressure. If the interaction becomes uncomfortable, stop, block or report it through your private profile. For persistent learning difficulties, consider structured support through Speaking Club or a teacher.
