English Conversation Topics for Beginners
Make the first question easy
Start with a concrete choice: “Do you prefer tea or coffee?” Follow with “Why?” and “When do you usually drink it?” This gives a beginner an accessible first answer and a route toward longer speech. Allow thinking time; silence is not automatically a problem.
Topic one: a normal day
Ask when the person starts work or study, what they do at lunchtime and which part of the day they like. Practise time expressions and present-simple verbs. A follow-up task is to compare weekdays and weekends. Avoid asking for an exact workplace or home address.
Topic two: food and places
Discuss a meal you enjoy, how you prepare it and where you like to eat in general. Use descriptions such as sweet, warm, quiet or busy. If a word is missing, describe it instead of immediately switching languages. You can check the word together afterward.
Topic three: a small plan
Plan an imaginary free afternoon: choose an activity, a meeting time and a budget. Use “We could…”, “I would prefer…” and “What about…?” Keep the scenario hypothetical if you do not yet know each other well. The goal is language practice, not pressure to meet.
Finish with a useful recap
Each person names one phrase they learned and asks one final question. Agree on the next topic before ending. A beginner-friendly partner should respect your pace; a similar level can be a good match. Use Connect to look for shared interests, and consider a guided group if you want a facilitator to help with turn-taking.
